Hangzhou Overview

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and the local political, economic and cultural center. Hangzhou is one of China's big tourist attractions. It has many historical relics and scenic spots. As the southern terminus of the Grand Canal, the city is located on the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in southeast China, a superior position in the Yangtze Delta and only 112 mi (180 km) from Shanghai.

The West Lake is undoubtedly the most renowned landmark, noted for the scenic beauty that blends naturally with many famous historical and cultural sites. The "Ten West Lake Prospects" selected from the most frequently visited attractions around the lake give travelers a panoramic view of the city’s highlights. ATM machines or Bank Automats are everywhere in China. They are easy to find at the Airport and Train Stations, so you can get your Chinese Yuan as soon as you land. 

You will see the familiar networks like Visa, Master Card, Cirrus, Plus, etc. used by most international financial institutions. Instructions will be available in English which makes it easy, and the process is exactly the same as at home.

The amount that can be withdrawn depends on the network and your own bank limit, normally about the equivalent of US 400, ￥2,500. Banks will normally levy a service charge, it can be a fixed minimum like US$3 while some banks charge a percentage of the amount withdrawn. You can inquire at your bank. It is well worth not having to carry big quantities of cash on hand.

Credit Cards are widely accepted in Hangzhou, other than at hotels and international restaurants, and the larger shopping centers. You will need cash for just about everything else: taxis, small shops and restaurants, ticket counters, etc.

If you plan on using your credit card, be sure to alert the bank that issued your card back home and let them know you will be traveling abroad and the dates of your trip to prevent them from blocking your account when they see any "foreign transactions" which could be suspicious or "outside of normal range of activity"

The weather can be hot during the National Day holiday, the first week of October, with the high temperature reaching 30 °C (86°F), but the high temperature usually drops below 20°C (68°F) later that same month. Besides, it seldom rains in this month. As the autumn is short in Hangzhou, the weather turns cooler after each autumn rain.

October is the tourist peak season in Hangzhou, especially during the National Day Golden Week, when there are also many Chinese tourists. Just like spring April, October is the other great time for travel in Hangzhou due to the comfortable climate.

What to Wear in Hangzhou in October

Generally, it is ok to wear summer clothes such as short-sleeved shirts and pants at noon during first half of the month. And remember to put on a coat or a long-sleeved shirt if going out in the early morning or at night. The temperature drops in later October, so it is necessary to prepare autumn clothes as well.
